Year 10 Product Design & Technology
Subject Prospectus - Technology
The Product Design process requires a designer to investigate a design problem, then develop and construct a product that solves that design problem for an end-user or group of end-users. Product Designers (also called 'Industrial Designers') are creative thinkers, who use their knowledge of different materials and processes to produce original and innovative products for use in society.
What will I learn?
Students will learn about the needs of different end-users, and how those needs inform design choices. Students will learn about a range of material types and their characteristics, as well as production methods - including CAD-CAM (such as CNC routing and 3D printing). Students will learn how to use a range of hand-tools to process different material types, as well as exploring finishes, fixtures and fittings.
What will I do?
Students will follow the Design Process to identify a design problem and explore information to develop creative and innovative solutions. They will develop construction plans to guide their production work, then safely use tools and equipment to construct their product. Students will evaluate their finished product and present their documented developmental work in a folio.
What will this lead to?
This subject leads directly into further study at VCE Product Design and Technology. This subject also develops critical and creative thinking skills necessary for other folio subjects such as: Media, Visual Communication and Design, Digital Technology and Art.
Why choose this subject?
I like to problem-solve
I am creative and enjoy creating original designs
I would like to further explore Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing
I enjoy applied learning and working with my hands
