Core Mathematics aims to develop students’ capacity to engage with the world by representing it in a logical and structured way. It is designed to be widely accessible and provides preparation for general employment, business or further study. Core Mathematics aims to develop students ability to respond in a refined way by employing mathematical strategies to analyse, evaluate and interpret meaning in a variety of different contexts.
Who should select Core Mathematics
Core Mathematics is aimed at students who wish to continue studying mathematics to ensure they have a range of employment and study options available in the future. It focuses on developing students’ mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning, analytical thought and problem-solving skills. It is expected students have successfully completed year 9 Core mathematics, but do not wish to study VCE Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics.

Semester 1 and 2 cater for a range of student interests and provide preparation for the study of VCE General Mathematics at the Units 1 and 2 level and contain assumed knowledge and skills for these units. Areas of study are:

To be considered for Maths Methods in VCE students must have successfully completed the Year 10 Advanced Maths subject.
To be considered for General Mathematics in VCE students must have successfully completed the Year 10 Core Maths subject.
