French is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, with 68 countries using French as a national language. French is the international language of cuisine, fashion, the arts and architecture. In addition, French is the language of diplomacy and international business, opening doors to a broad range of job opportunities. As one of only two global languages, French is the official language of the United Nations, The Olympic Committee and the International Red Cross.
What will I learn?
In Year 9, students of languages are motivated, engaged and excited to expand their language skills and cultural knowledge. As we tackle topics such as daily routine and school life, leisure, music and exploring cities, students are able to make connections with the experiences of young French speakers and deepen their intercultural understanding and ability to connect through language.
What will I do?
Students will become more competent in French within the four major communication skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, students will enhance their cultural understanding.
What will this lead to?
Continuing with French in year 9 opens up a world of possibilities, including the opportunity to participate in future Warrnambool College French study tours. Students will also gain confidence in speaking the language in a way that will accelerate their progress if they choose to continue in year 10.
Why choose this subject?
I enjoy learning about other cultures and would welcome the opportunity to meet young people from France
I would like to speak another language and learn more about my own in the process
I would like to have the opportunity to travel and think French as a global language would be an asset
Testimonials:
'I would absolutely recommend doing French - it is so different from any other classes you are able to take. You really get to learn so many new and interesting things that challenge you as a learner, without it being stressful as all your classmates are in the same boat and all the teachers are very understanding and helpful.'
'To have the chance to be immersed in another language and to learn about another culture, especially one as beautiful as french is truly an amazing opportunity.'
'Going into French I was stressed that I wasn't going to be as good as my classmates, I've now learnt that you don't have to be the best at it to enjoy it and get the most from it. In French class you are surrounded by people who are all learning with you and I just found it such a safe place to learn so many new and fascinating things.'
