Ever wondered how your clothes are made? Want to wear something that is not being worn by some-one else? Then this unit is a start to addressing these questions.
What will I learn?
Over the semester students will learn about the basics in sewing, such as using a sewing machine and both hand and machine stitching. Different fabrics will be researched with knit and woven materials being used in the production of clothing items. As the ability to read and understand a pattern is a key to sewing, students will look at the variety of symbols and decipher the instructions given.
What will I do?
Students will start with using the sewing machine to produce a tote bag made from calico that is hand painted and printed by students with their own unique design. The sewing machine will be further used and skill developed as different stitches are testing and seam and hems are researched and samples created. All of this skill development leads to the ability to make a pair of shorts and matching hair piece. The studets will also make a plushie dinosaur practicing hand sewing and button application. The steps of the design process will be applied by the students to create potentially individual, one off items that meet their needs and personality.
What will this lead to?
Skills and knowledge gained during this unit can be the start to a great hobby or compliment a passion for fashion. This can be the start to more complex projects. It can lead into Year 10 Fabrics into patterns and potentially VCE Product Design with fabrics used in the item produced.
