Year 9 Humanities

Year 9 Humanities explores how human societies function, interact, and evolve over time. Students will examine global environments, explore the workplace through local industry connections and investigate how the modern world has been shaped through history.

What will I learn?

The Humanities teaching and learning program aims to develop and enhance students’ capacity to question, analyse, and engage with the world by transforming how they understand human history, global environments, and society.

What will I do?

In Year 9, students explore how natural environments, historic events, and human decisions shape our lives today.  Students will build essential skills in analysing spatial map data and primary historical sources, thinking critically about different perspectives, evaluating sustainable solutions to environmental challenges, and learning how to take active, informed action as a citizen in our democracy.

In Term 2, students undertake our Industry Connection Program (ICP), an Inquiry Based Project where they present their solutions to industry problems of practice. In preparation for their presentations, students need to research the problem to fully understand the problem and how the problem impacts user groups. Students develop questions and industry mentors respond to these questions which helps support students with their understanding of the problem posed. Students complete industry tours where students find out more information about the problem. Industry mentors provide feedback to student practice presentation pitches at school. 

In the recent years, students have been excited and engaged in the Industry Connection Program; developing their employability skills (Communication, Critical Thinking, Digital literacy, Problem solving and Teamwork); and have been exposed to 7 different organisations and multiple job opportunities in South West Victoria, which has lead to improved aspirations leading into their senior years of schooling by increasing their awareness of career pathway opportunities. Students also learn about resumes, cover letters, interview technique, explore labour market information and experience tours of SW TAFE and Deakin University.

What will this lead to?

Students will build critical thinking, research, and workplace skills in Year 9 and thereafter access a wide variety of Humanities pathways in Year 10 and VCE/VCE VM, including History, Geography, Business Management, Languages and Legal Studies. The ICP experience directly enhances career awareness and helps inform senior pathway choices by connecting learning directly to regional employment and tertiary study opportunities.
