Students refine their personal creative voice through a series of sophisticated three-dimensional practical and theoretical projects. By selecting Ceramics and Sculpture at a Year 10 level, students advance their problem-solving capabilities by integrating advanced design thinking, complex structural techniques, and mature personal expression. Working with tactile mediums allows students to bridge the gap between abstract concepts and physical form.
Students will learn to communicate complex three-dimensional concepts through advanced structural drawing and clay (model) making. They will expand their technical repertoire by manipulating a diverse range of media, which may include clay (glazing and firing techniques), wire sculptures, wood, stone, mixed media, and sustainable materials. Documentation is elevated as students learn to critically analyse, evaluate, and justify their aesthetic choices within a comprehensive visual diary.
Students will synthesise initial ideas into resolved, sophisticated concepts, testing the structural and aesthetic limits of 3D materials.
Practical Component: Students will design and construct high-quality ceramic and sculptural artworks, thoroughly documenting their trials, triumphs, and iterations in their visual diary.
Theoretical Component: Written and analytical tasks will require students to investigate contemporary and historical 3D artists. Students will analyze these artists' frameworks and apply these high-level insights to enrich their own studio practice.
With its strong emphasis on rigorous 'hands-on' craftsmanship, critical inquiry, and reflective practice, this subject serves as the ideal prerequisite and springboard for:
VCE Art Making and Exhibiting
VCE Visual Communication Design (VCD)
Future Career Pathways: Artist, Sculptor, Industrial Designer, Animator, Set/Prop Designer, Ceramicist, Architect, Illustrator, Educator, or Filmmaker.
I want to elevate my 'hands-on' artmaking skills to a senior level.
I enjoy the challenge of turning complex, abstract ideas into tangible realities.
I want an engaging, creative outlet that balances practical making with design theory.
I want to develop the spatial and critical thinking skills highly valued in VCE and beyond.
