Year 10 Product Design & Industry
Subject Prospectus - Technology
Timber is a preferred material in the construction industry as it has the required structural properties and is a renewable resource. It also has physical properties that make it desirable in furniture design and other personal products. This subject explores the different ways in which timber is used in industry and the range of tools and construction methods used.
What will I learn?
Students will learn about the structure of timber and different types, and how this knowledge informs choice of timber and construction methods. Students will learn a range of joinery techniques that will both develop and challenge their accuracy and attention to detail. Students will also learn about the range of tools used and how to care for and maintain them.
What will I do?
Students will select and apply complex timber joining techniques to construct small furniture or similar products. Students will interpret technical drawings and plans, and independently apply these to create quality timber products to a high degree of accuracy and quality finishes.
What will this lead to?
