“What affect do food and pharmaceuticals have on our lives?”
The unit will involve investigating the chemical and physical properties of both food and pharmaceuticals, how these properties change through processes both within and outside of our bodies, how they are made, where they come from, the science behind them, and the effects of these substances on our environment. The unit will involve a range of both practical and theoretical activities, and will include an investigative project.
Specific food products will be targeted. Those currently included are chocolate, honey, yeast, dairy and soft drinks. We focus on the science behind these food products, how they are made and importance and impact within the community.
Specific areas of pharmaceuticals will be targeted. Those currently included are cold medicines and opiates. We focus on the science behind the pharmaceutical products, how they are made, how they are tested and importance and impact within the community.
The skills and knowledge gained in this subject will be valuable for students planning to study VCE Food Studies, Chemistry or Biology. Possible career options include Food Science, Food Technology, Food Manufacturing, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Pharmacy.
Science Guidelines
To be considered for a VCE subject, students will need to have successfully completed two modules of Year 10 Science.
