William Wingfield

1867 - 1903


William Robert Wingfield was apprenticed to trainer Tom Sherwood in 1886 and rode

the chestnut colt Wimbledon for Mr L. C. Hendry on several occasions.

Increasing weight saw him over hurdles, where, on March 5, 1889, he won on Lady Onslow at Sandown.

He was born in December 1867 in Nottingham, married Maud Augusta Sayers in late 1893 and sadly died of pneumonia at his residence, Fern Villa, Epsom, on January 31, 1903, aged 35.
