Bryn Joseph Walker held a jump jockey’s licence during the mid-1960s and rode one winner. This was at Uttoxeter on September 29, 1966, when partnering Pure Gem to victory by four lengths in the Weaver Handicap Hurdle, beating the Owen Brennan-trained Lucky Pearl, ridden by Peter Brightwell.
The five-year-old Pure Gem, owned by Frank Gilman and trained by George Vergette, had won at Warwick five days earlier when partnered by Vergette’s stable jockey Johnny Kenneally, but the Uttoxeter race was confined to jockeys who had not ridden more than 15 winners, so Bryn had his chance. Among the beaten jockeys that day were the ill-fated Fred Dixon and future top trainer David Elsworth.
Bryn had one more ride on Pure Gem, finishing third at Market Rasen on October 8, 1966, before another of Vergette’s claiming riders, Mick ‘Nobby’ Clark, took over. Bryn continued to hold a licence until the 1967/68 season but rode no more winners.
