Ian Wright had three wins in a fairly brief career over jumps. A conditional with former successful National Hunt jockey and even more successful trainer Philip Hobbs, he rode his first winner at Cheltenham on October 9, 1986, when Bonanza Boy, making his racecourse debut, was pushed out to land the Grunwick N.H. Flat Race by three lengths.
Peter Hobbs, brother of the trainer, then took over in the saddle and won four races on the gelding that season. Subsequently transferred to Martin Pipe’s Nicolashayne stable, Bonanza Boy went on to win several prestigious races, including back-to-back Welsh Grand Nationals in 1988 and 1989.
Ian’s second success came at Devon & Exeter on New Year’s Day 1987 when Northern Interest recorded a comfortable victory in the Thorverton Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle, beating More One Way by 15 lengths.
Ian kept the ride for two unplaced starts but was able to enjoy a third and final win when Tropical Mist led from the third flight to land the May Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at Taunton on 1 May 1987. They may have been a little fortunate as the remainder of the meeting was abandoned after that race, the first on the card, due to the slippery surface of the course. Ian later became assistant trainer to Philip Hobbs.
