Andrew Welsh rode over jumps in the 1980s and had one win, having made his debut when finishing tailed off on Ramprides Star in the Abbots Ripton Conditional Jockeys’ Selling Handicap Hurdle at Huntingdon on April 16, 1983.
It was not until the meeting at Southwell exactly four years later that he had his solitary success. By that time he was riding for John Jenkins, and it was on his six-year-old chestnut gelding Bassett Boy that he scored, catching the longtime leader Unicol on the run-in and landing the Marksman Lager Conditional Jockeys’ Novices’ Hurdle by a length and a half.
The winning pair had finished fifth of 22 runners in their only previous start at the same course 15 days earlier. Andrew did not ride Bassett Boy again and had no more wins.
