John Walters, the son of a trainer, was born in Middleton, Herefordshire c1839.
He won the Northumberland Plate in 1855 on Whitelock.
He later trained, achieving both his highlights in 1866 when saddling the winners of the two most important steeplechases in the calendar. He sent out Salamander to win the Grand National and Shangarry to win the National Hunt Chase, held that year at Crewkerne.
He died in early January 1915.
