Arthur Wells

Aged 50, professional jockey Arthur Wells, owing to injuries and several falls, hadn't ridden for some time. In fact, recently he had become the caretaker at 32, Gloucester Crescent in Hyde Park.

Undoubtedly unwell, he constantly complained of severe headaches, and also declared that people, including his dead brother, were following him about everywhere.

On Monday, 4 July 1892, his wife left him alone while she went out shopping. Later, Mrs Emily Young, calling at the house, discovered Arthur's body, hanging from a window. She called for assistance and the body was cut down. Dr George Robert Lake, who happened to be passing at the time, pronounced him to be dead.

The jury at the inquest returned a verdict of 'suicide while temporarily insane'.
