George Albert Welson held a jump jockey’s licence for just two seasons in the late 1950s/early 1960s and rode a total of five winners, all trained by Wilfred Brookes, who was based at Eaton Constantine, near Shrewsbury.

He had his first ride in the Haydock Novices’ Hurdle at that Lancashire venue on November 26, 1959, finishing third on the four-year-old Ocean Express. He did not have to wait long for his initial success, which came at Stratford-on-Avon on December 10, when Wise Prince took the lead at the fifth flight and ran on well to land the Snitterfield Selling Handicap Hurdle by two lengths.

His second win was gained at Warwick on February 8, 1960, when Severn View beat Starlit II by a length and a half in the Lapworth Handicap Hurdle. That was followed by a much more comfortable victory in the Ipstones Novices’ Chase at Uttoxeter on Easter Monday, when Jamolee won by a distance.

Hydra-Dor was his next winner when taking the Bearstone Novices’ Hurdle at Woore on October 6, 1960, beating Neil Morrissey’s mount Nasserling by ten lengths. Hydra-Dor showed little in his next two races but bounced back to form at Haydock Park on January 7, 1961 to give George his final win in the Ashton Handicap Hurdle.

He managed one third place from three subsequent starts on Hydra-Dor but there were no more firsts. He had his final ride on Rowanberry, unplaced in the George Britten Handicap Hurdle on Easter Monday, April 3, 1961.
