Albert Edward Wetherell was born in Epsom on March 4, 1882, the son of a stud groom.

A successful apprentice, he won the 1899 Royal Hunt Cup on Refractor. He also won the 1899 Derby Cup on Proclamation.

After retiring from the saddle, he became an equally successful racing tipster up until 1915.

He then served in the Great War but never prospered after being demobbed.

He died in Kensington on September 3, 1969.

His surname has been spelt in various different ways – ‘Weatherell’ when winning the Royal Hunt Cup – but his family prefers the spelling Wetherell’.
