Thomas Whiteside

Article by Chris Pitt

Tom Whiteside was apprenticed to Hugh Barclay, who trained at Lockerbie in Scotland. He rode his first winner on Beltourney in a one-mile apprentice handicap at Lanark on July 24, 1958. He rode two winners in 1959, both on Barclay’s Chateau Vatel, in apprentice races at Hamilton and Lanark.

He waited almost two years for the next winner and then rode two in four days, both on Beltourney in April 1961. He came out of his time in August of that year and never won a race after losing his claim. The closest he came was finishing second, beaten five lengths, on Cool Breeze at Hamilton Park on April 28, 1962.

He last held a jockey’s licence in 1965.

His winners, in chronological order, were:

1. Beltourney, Lanark, July 24, 1958

2. Chateau Vatel, Hamilton Park, July 17, 1959

3. Chateau Vatel, Lanark, July 23, 1959

4. Beltourney, Ayr, April 10, 1961

5. Beltourney, Bogside, April 14, 1961
