George Wilson

1875 -1957

National Hunt jockey George Francis Wilson was born in 1875. He rode a total of 140 winners including big race victories in the Grand Annual Chase and the Grand International Hurdle.

He had his first ride under NH rules on Titus, who finished third in the Hunters’ Selling Hurdle at the Sheffield & Rotherham fixture on November 2, 1891. George rode his first winner on Mock Orange in the January Handicap Hurdle at Leicester on January 31, 1894.

He had just one mount in the Grand National, in 1897 on 33-1 shot Golden Cress, who was among the fallers.

George recorded his first major success on Nat Gould, the 7-4 favourite, in the 1902 Grand Annual Chase. He enjoyed his most successful year in 1906 with 15 wins, highlighted by his triumph on 8-1 chance Leviathan, who beat nine rivals to land that year’s Grand International Hurdle at Gatwick.

He rode what proved to be his last winner on Vertoi in the Canterbury Selling Handicap Hurdle at Folkestone on March 14, 1914. His final mount was on Bolo, who was pulled up in the Selling Handicap Hurdle at Hawthorn Hill on February12, 1916.

George Wilson, died on August 17, 1957.
