Walter Wood

The son of a butcher, Walter Wood was born in Wakefield on January 27, 1850. He was apprenticed to Harry Hall at Spigot Lodge in Yorkshire.

He achieved his biggest success when winning the 1875 Ebor Handicap on Lily Agnes.

Shortly afterwards, he left to ride in Australia and New Zealand.

After retiring from the saddle, he returned to Britain and lived in Newmarket.
