Thomas Patrick White, known as Paddy, rode over jumps for two seasons in Britain in the 1980s and won 14 races.
He had the good fortune to ride as a conditional for leading northern trainer Arthur Stephenson but made an ignominious start by trailing in a well-beaten last on his first ride for him in the Orton Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase at Carlisle on October 24, 1986. After finishing a distant fourth at Sedgefield next time out, the pair made it third time lucky when taking advantage of the fall of the leader Silent Echo three fences from home, coming home clear to land the Fletcher’s Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase at Uttoxeter on November 13, scoring by 15 lengths.
Paddy added four more wins before the end of the season, then registered nine in 1987/88, beginning with one on each day of Cartmel’s August Bank Holiday fixture.
His last success came on the final day of the season at Market Rasen when Little Mittens led two flights out and held off the challenge of the favourite Quintana to take the Ray Edmonds Snooker Club Long Distance Handicap Hurdle, winning by a length and a half.
