Stanley Wootton

Stanley Thomas Wootton, born on June 28, 1897, did not become as successful a jockey as his elder brother Frank, but did manage to win the 1910 Chester Cup and the Northumberland Plate, both on that splendid filly Elizabetta.

During the 1914-18 war, he served as an officer in the Royal Fusiliers and was awarded the Military Cross.

On demobilisation, he took over his father's old stable at Treadwell House, Epsom. Apprentices who flourished under him included Charlie Smirke, Ken Gethin, Staff Ingham, Joseph Marshall, Joseph Caldwell, Jack Sirett and Peter Ashworth.

Stanley was different inasmuch as he was more interested in on bringing off successful betting coups than winning prize money.

So successful was he that after a particularly profitable year in 1924 when he saddled 84 winners, he bought Epsom's Walton Downs for £35,000 the following year.

His life was in stark contrast to his elder brother's.

Stanley Wootton died on March 21, 1986, leaving almost £637,000.
