Frederick Willder rode over jumps in the 1950s and had five wins.
He first appeared at Birmingham on February 20, 1950, when Redcross Girl was unplaced in the Graveley Maiden Hurdle (Division 1). The four-year-old had shown little in three previous starts and a switch to fences next time out did not appear to improve matters. Fred had kept the ride, but there was another unplaced effort and then a fall before, at Doncaster on March 20, the pair finally came good when landing the Wheatley Park Novices’ Chase. Starting at 100-6, Redcross Girl took the lead four fences from home and won comfortably by a length and a half.
Fred only rode her once more, finishing fourth at Market Rasen on Easter Monday, but at Huntingdon on Whit Monday, May 29, he had his second success when 100-8 chance Clover Mor just got the better of a duel with Lone Wolf II, the mount of top jockey George Slack, to win the Alconbury Selling Handicap Chase by a short head.
Almost two years elapsed before Fred next visited the winner’s enclosure, but at Southwell on May 5, 1952, he steered the five-year-old Romey to victory in the Dunham Selling Handicap Hurdle, beating the 14-year-old Usonia by four lengths.
There was a much shorter gap before his next winner, which came at Market Rasen on September 20 when Inigale, like Romey owned and trained by permit holder Jose Rose, took advantage of a mistake at the last by Chadodean to take the Walesby Chase by three lengths.
Fred had plenty of rides, more than 50 in the 1954/55 season alone, but managed only one more victory, that coming when Peggy Jones won the Juvenile Hurdle at Southwell on April 9, 1955. Fred had been her regular partner and had finished second twice on her that season, However, despite having finally won on her, future trainer Bill Haigh then took over in the saddle.
Fred’s last ride was at Market Rasen on May 11, 1957, when 33-1 outsider Elsie pulled up in the Legsby Chase.
