Samuel Wilson rode one winner over jumps, having begun his career by trailing in tenth of eleven finishers on Sir Charles in the Hindlip Novices’ Chase at Worcester on March 2, 1953, a race won by Tim Molony on Parbleu.
However, five-time champion jockey Molony finished only fourth when Sam gained his only success. This came at Stratford on February 11, 1954, when Romany took the lead two fences from home and ran on to land the Novices’ Chase (Division 1) by three-quarters of a length, Sam was having his second ride on the five-year-old, trained by Phil Doherty, and kept the mount for the next two starts, which ended in a fall and then a second place at Wincanton on March 28, after which Mick Pumfrey took over in the saddle.
Sam’s final ride was at Southwell on April 15, 1954, when Clatford was runner-up, beaten four lengths, in the Fiskerton Selling Handicap Hurdle.
