Based with Droitwich permit holder Hugh Sumner, Eric Walker rode two winners under National Hunt rules, both in 1966.
He had his first ride at Ludlow on September 15, 1965, when Halsvale was unplaced in the last race on the card, the Elton Novices’ Hurdle. However, the last race at Stratford on February 5, 1966, went far better, with Wrensborough’s Son coming through at the final flight and running on to beat Magic Glen by two lengths, giving Eric his first winner. The seven-year-old was owned and trained by Hugh Sumner and had been placed twice from seven starts that season. Eric rode the gelding three more times before the campaign ended, finishing second twice.
Hugh Sumner also supplied him with his only other winner when 12-year-old Perfect Poise had six lengths to spare over Agitate at the end of the Farewell Handicap Chase, a race for novice riders, at Stratford on June 3, 1966.
Eric’s last ride came at Worcester on April 12, 1967, when Ambassador’s Gamble finished seventh of 20 runners, having been prominent for a long way, in the Malvern Novices Hurdle (Division 3).
