Eric Lawrence Warren was born on September 8, 1930. He served his apprenticeship with Henry Beresford Leach (always known as ‘Chubb’ Leach), who trained at Queensberry Lodge, Newmarket and rode his first winner on Marlane in the Swaffham Handicap on the first day of Newmarket’s Craven Meeting on April 13, 1948. Marlane was also his second winner when landing the two-mile Ward End Handicap at Birmingham the following month. Eric enjoyed another Birmingham success at the end of the season when Jacobite won the one-mile Stonebridge Handicap in November.

He rode six winners in 1949 and four in 1950 before coming out of his time, but he struggled without a claim and scored only once in 1951, on Leach’s filly Lyrical Princess at Leicester on 2 April.

On December 8, 1951, he married Mavis Ethel Draper, who later bore him two daughters, Linda Elizabeth and Susan Angela. Outside of racing, he was a keen tennis player.

His next winners in Britain weren’t until 1955 when he rode three, all for Newmarket trainer Harry Thomson Jones, the highlight being a double at Bath in June on Managgio and Grancette. He rode two the following year but no more until three years later when he scored his last victory in Britain on the Jack Jarvis-trained Lentolia at Newmarket on April 29, 1959.

His comparative lack of success in Britain was compensated by his travels abroad where he was in great demand. He won the Doughtie Cup in India, the Norwegian Derby Trial and the Norwegian October Handicap.

He rode 15 winners in Norway in 1958 and finished second in the Norwegian Derby on Mikkel, beaten by the Edward Hide-ridden Flying Friendship, who won all three of that year’s Scandinavian Derbies adding the Swedish and Danish versions to his Norwegian triumph.

Eric subsequently accepted a retainer to ride for Mr C. B. Nathorst in Sweden where he rode with success throughout the 1960s. Among the good horse he rode there was Qantas, winner of Sweden’s Stora Priz (the Stockholm Grand Prix) in 1961, having been runner-up in that race the previous year.
