Trefor Williams rode four winners over jumps in the 1980s and lost a fifth on technical grounds.
He started out as a conditional jockey with Jenny Pitman and had his first ride at Cheltenham on October 8, 1980, when finishing fourth on Rodney Parade in the Nicholson Opportunity Handicap Hurdle.
By the time he rode his first winner he was working for Rosemary Lomax, but it was the Gloucestershire trainer Graeme Roe who provided him with that initial success when All Bright was left clear by the fall of Triple Sweet at the second last fence and ran on to take the Janie Husbands Challenge Cup Handicap Chase at Taunton on April 21, 1983 by five lengths.
Mrs Lomax trained Trefor’s second winner when Le Lavador, making his first start for nearly a year, recorded a comfortable victory in the Shaddoxhurst Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at Folkestone on December 20, 1983.
It was not until October 12, 1985 that he had his third win. This time the successful trainer was former jockey Owen O’Neill, whose Derrycreeha Lass beat 16 rivals to land the Staffordshire Regiment Challenge Cup Handicap Hurdle at Uttoxeter by a length and a half.
His fourth victory was gained on the six-year-old Harvest in the Neenton Selling Handicap Hurdle at Ludlow on February 5, 1986, when getting the better of a prolonged duel with Mark Richards’ mount Deep Coach by a neck.
Trefor appeared to have registered a fifth success at Southwell on March 29, 1986 when Model Lady proved too good for her 19 rivals in the Bourne N.H. Flat Race. However, it was then discovered that the four-year-old had carried the wrong weight and so was disqualified. Next time out they finished second, albeit beaten eight lengths, which was as close as Trefor came to riding another winner.
Trefor Williams’ wins were, in chronological order:
1. All Bright, Taunton, April 21, 1983
2. La Lavador, Folkestone, December 20, 1983
3. Derrycreeha Lass, Uttoxeter, October 12, 1985
4. Harvest, Ludlow, February 5, 1986
Trefor Williams' final winner: Harvest, Ludlow, February 5, 1986
