Walter Wharton

Walter Wharton Jr. was born in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, on January 21, 1959, and was the son of Walter Wharton, who trained the great Vaguely Noble as a two-year-old.

Walter's first win came on Persian King at Warwick on June 7, 1975, while an apprentice with Frenchie Nicholson.

He had a memorable 1978, becoming the first jockey since Willie Snaith in 1961 to ride successive winners of the Great Metropolitan at Epsom.

Walter began having weight problems and eventually turned to training.

His father, after a triple heart bypass operation, quit training in 1988 and moved to Tadcaster, West Yorkshire.
