Peter John Webb rode over jumps towards the end of the 1970s and had one winner.
A conditional jockey with Ken Cunningham-Brown, he had his first ride on the penultimate day of the 1977/78 campaign when All Bright finished seventh of 19 runners in the Puppy Walkers’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle at Stratford.
His sole success came at Devon & Exeter on September 27, 1979, when Dornie won the day’s most valuable race, the Duchy of Cornwall Challenge Cup Handicap Chase. The nine-year-old, owned at trained by Cunningham-Brown at Middle Wallop in Hampshire, was prominent throughout and ran on strongly to beat the favourite Mighty Marine by seven lengths.
It was the first time Peter had ridden the mare. Two subsequent starts resulted in one last place and a distant second at Kempton in October.
His final ride was on Jim’s Double, the horse sadly taking a fatal fall in the Pickeridge Selling Handicap Hurdle at Taunton on April 24, 1980. It is not known whether that fall was directly responsible for ending Peter’s career in the saddle but he did not ride again thereafter.
