Stephen John West rode over jumps for a couple of seasons in the early 1980s and had two wins. He started as a conditional with Cornish trainer Trevor Hallet and had his first ride at Newbury on November 5, 1980, when Law Of The Land was unplaced in the Cold Ash Novices’ Hurdle after early prominence.
He opened his account at Sandown Park’s Royal Artillery meeting on March 31, 1981, when seasonal debutant Gwaynton took the lead at the Pond Fence and ran on to land the Downs Opportunity Selling Handicap Chase by two and a half lengths. It was the seven-year-old’s first start for over a year and he started at 33-1. Stphen kept the ride but one fourth (and last) place was the best they managed, and there were two falls.
His other victory came at Devon & Exeter on May 25, 1981, when Mr Peapock, trained like Gwaynton by Trevor Hallett, led nearly all the way and was able to resist the challenge of Tom’s Fool on the run-in to land the Otter Way Novices’ Chase by half a length.
Mr Peapock ran only twice during the 1981/82 campaign but won four chases the following season, culminating in a 20-1 shock victory in Cheltenham’s Mildmay of Flete Challenge Cup in March 1983 when ridden by his regular pilot, 7lb claimer Leslie Bloomfield.
By then, Stephen West had relinquished his licence. He had ridden for part of the 1991/92 season and was second once, albeit beaten 20 lengths. He had his final two rides at Southwell on October 29, 1991, pulling up Corona Prince in the Bottesford Novices’ Chase (Division 2) and finishing fifth of ten finishers on Reehad in the East Bridgford Handicap Chase.
