William Walters

(1841-1915)

Jump jockey William Walters was born at Hednesford in 1841.

He was apprenticed to Edwin Weever. He rode Lord Coventry’s mare Emblem in 1865 Grand National, two years after she had won the race in the hands of George Stevens. Sadly, there was no such glory for William Walters, who pulled her up.

He did not ride any big winners and later trained at Newmarket with limited success: he sent out Stretchworth Bell to win a 2-y-o race at Ripon in May 1913

He died on April 11, 1915.
