Arthur Charles Walker was an Australian jockey who plied his trade in Britain for parts of the 1923 and 1924 seasons, riding a total of eight winners and finishing third in the Derby.
He made a perfect start to his stay when winning a big race on his first ride. The date may have been Friday 13 April but there was nothing unlucky about it for Arthur, for he landed the Greenham Stakes at Newbury on Parth, trained by James Crawford at Ogbourne Maisey.
Five days later he won Newmarket’s Wood Ditton Stakes on another of Crawford’s three-year-olds, Portsoy.
Parth could only finish seventh in the 2,000 Guineas but Arthur was back in the Newmarket winner’s enclosure two days later after riding Mansouriyah, again trained by Crawford, to victory in a division of the May Stakes for two-year-olds. He was also among the winners at Newmarket’s next meeting a fortnight later, landing the Newmarket Handicap, worth £620 to the winner, on Double Hackle for trainer Joseph Cannon.
At Manchester’s May meeting, Arthur finished sixth on Double Hackle in the Manchester Cup and second in the Red Rose Stakes on Suryakumari but did manage to win the Prestbury Welter Handicap on Skivick. His next winner came four days later at Bath, where he guided Her Ladyship to a three-length success in a two-year-old seller for Joseph Cannon.
At Epsom the following week he finished third on Parth in the Derby, beaten by Papyrus and Pharos, beaten a total of two and a half lengths, despite being badly away.
Having ridden seven winners in as many weeks he failed to ride another until scraping home by a neck on 5/4 favourite Virgin Gold, trained by Joseph Cannon, at Newcastle on 26 June. He departed for Australia soon afterwards. Meanwhile, Parth went on to finish fourth in the St Leger before landing that year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in the hands of Frank O’Neill.
Arthur retuned in 1924 but rode just one winner, 10/1 shot Johnny Roebuck in the Doon Welter Plate at Ayr on 30 May, eventually heading back home, never to return.
