Allan Frederick Weller rode two winners over jumps during the 1960s, having made an inauspicious start to his race-riding career.
His first two rides were at Huntingdon on October 31, 1964, when he finished last on Louida in the Cambridgeshire Hurdle and pulled up Diamond Lou in the Cromwell Hurdle. Things could only get better, and they did eventually, but not for almost three years.
Allan was based with Epsom trainer Ron Smyth but it was another former jockey turned trainer, Reg Akehurst, who provided him with his first win when successful on Pulpit in the Southover Handicap Hurdle, a race for novice riders, at Plumpton on May 11, 1967. Despite veering left on the run-in they beat Newton Beauty, the mount of Garry Williams, by half a length.
It was for Ron Smyth that Allan had his only other victory when Nikko was a comfortable winner of the November Handicap Hurdle at Kempton Park on November 22, 1967. The six-year-old had been considered good enough to run in the previous season’s Champion Hurdle after winning the “Black and White” Hurdle at Ascot. Jimmy Uttley had been in the saddle when Nikko made his seasonal debut in Sandown’s Ackerman Skeaping Hurdle on November 11, finishing unplaced, but dropped down into lesser company, Nikko and Allan took their chance at Kempton and beat Sundew’s Nephew, the mount of Andy Turnell, by four lengths.
Allan rode no more winners and had his final ride on Crown Scarlet, finishing fourth in the Wonderland Handicap Chase at Haydock Park on March 8, 1969.
