19-year-old Robert Wales was riding his father’s 9-year-old gelding Papillon at Fakenham when it collapsed before the open ditch and rolled on top of him. Robert, who was part of a well-known East Anglian racing family, appeared regularly at Cottenham and Horseheath point-to-points and, in 1981, rode six winners. He lived at Markham Hall, Norfolk. The incident took place on Monday 3 May 1982.
