Cawley Walley

Born in 1887, National Hunt jockey Jonothan Stephen Cawley Walley (he was known by his third Christian name) rode a total of 41 winners over jumps in the early years of the 20th century.

He started out as an amateur and had his first ride under NH rules when finishing a tailed off last of three on a horse called Kames in the Rock Ferry Hurdle at Hooton Park on 27 October 1900.

Despite having so far failed to ride a winner, he turned professional midway through 1901, finally breaking the ice with a double at Bangor-on-Dee on 4 April 1902, initiated by Moraine in the Grand Wynnstay Chase and completed by Oenopian in the Flintshire Chase.

He enjoyed his most successful year in 1904, riding ten winners. They included a double at the annual Hall Green Steeplechases meeting, beginning by finishing alone on Initiated in the Hall Green Chase after both his rivals had fallen; then winning the Robin Hood Chase on Winkfield’s Dower. He also rode Winkfield’s Dower to win at Keele Park in October.

Cawley excelled at Keele Park, collecting nine of his 41 wins at that Staffordshire venue. Half of his six victories in 1903 were gained at Keele. Having won on Oenopian in the Keele Handicap Chase in February, he then won on both days of the April meeting aboard Road Rule in the Burslem Steeplechase on the first day and Forbear in the Butterton Hunt Chase on day two, the latter having won his previous start under Cawley at Ludlow earlier that month.

He did likewise in 1905 with a winner on both days of Keele’s May fixture, landing the Stoke Chase on Moraine on the opening day, then riding that same horse to land the following day’s Keele Handicap Chase. He rode Moraine to win for a third time that month in the Ronin Hood Scurry Chase at Hall Green.

Cawley’s six wins in 1906 included Keele Park’s Devonshire Handicap Chase on Officer.

He did not ride a winner in 1907, won two in 1908 and then recorded just a single success in each of the next four years. He bowed out on a winning note when guiding Calliope to an eight-length success in the Trentham Selling Chase at Woore on 18 April 1912, his final mount.

Cawley rode his first two winners, Morraine & Œnopion, at Bangor-on-Dee on April 4 1902
