Ted Waite

Edward George (Ted) Waite was born on November 19, 1956, and served his apprenticeship with John Dunlop but didn’t ride a winner on the Flat.

Graduating to riding over jumps, he spent the vast majority of his career with Bob Turnell and his son Andrew. He rode his first winner on Bob Turnell’s French Canadian in a Cheltenham novices’ chase on December 31, 1976.

He never rode a really big winner but nonetheless achieved a fair measure of success while with the Turnells. Among the winners he rode as a 7lb claimer for Bob Turnell was King Neptune, on which he won at Warwick on December 29, 1978, and Kempton’s Rendlesham Handicap Hurdle on February 24, 1979.

As a 4lb claimer regularly rode a chaser named Dandy Man, owner-trained by Mrs Helen Mobley at Banbury. Ted won twice on him during April 1980, at Towcester on Easter Monday and at Worcester 12 days later.

Having ridden out his claim, Ted rode 13 winners during the 1983/84 season. They included two on Andrew Turnell’s novice hurdler Celtic Time, at Taunton on December 1 and at Huntingdon on Boxing Day. He also notched a double on the Saturday of Newton Abbot’s 1984 Easter meeting, winning both divisions of the Mile End Maiden Hurdle aboard National Dandy for Ted Fisher and Deadly Going for Ian Wardle.

Sadly, the number of winners dropped. He had a brief period riding for David Gandolfo but had just one winner from 24 rides in the 1985/86 season. He continued to hold a licence until 1990 before hanging up his boots.
