Robert Wall

(c1885 -1956)

National Hunt jockey Robert Wall was born in Worcestershire circa 1885. He was the elder brother of fellow jump jockey Gilbert Wall (1889-1956).

In 1909 Robert finished third in the Stayers’ Handicap Chase at Birmingham on Buckaway II and then rode him in that year’s Grand National. The pair were among the 100/1 outsiders and among the many fallers.

Robert rode several winners in 1922 including Forarity at Cardiff on Easter Monday and Gleena More at Colwall Park on May 15.

However, back at Cardiff on June 6, he suffered a broken back and was lucky to survive a broken neck when his mount Kendal de Wet fell in a three-mile handicap chase and another horse jumped on him.

Robert Wall died in 1956, the same year as his brother. Like Robert, Gilbert Wall had just one ride in the Grand National, 100/1 Any Time in 1922. Again, they were among the many fallers.
