Robert Windsor-Clive

Robert Windsor-Clive (always known as Bob) was born on May 4, 1950 and enjoyed a brief spell as a National Hunt jockey in the early 1970s, riding 30 winners.

He began his career as an amateur rider attached to Michael Scudamore’s Hoarwithy, Herefordshire stable and rode his first winner on novice hurdler Old Brandy at Market Rasen on March 4, 1972.

He won twice more on Old Brandy that season, at Devon & Exeter on March 25 and at Worcester on May 13.

He turned professional the following season, 1972/73, and rode a highly creditable total of 20 winners. Highlights included a double at Wolverhampton over Christmas, the first leg on Michael Scudamore’s hurdler Napata, which resulted in Bob’s claim being reduced to 5lb, and completed by Katie Gaze’s chaser Even Dawn. He ended the season with a Whit Monday victory on the Roy Edwards-trained Cymru Am Byth at Uttoxeter.

What was to be Bob’s last season as a jockey, 1973/74, brought seven winners, including another for Roy Edwards, on Full Board at Worcester in October. Four were for Shifnal, Shropshire trainer Roy Cambridge, on chaser Haggis at Huntingdon and hurdler Fort Charles at Nottingham, followed by a Huntingdon double on December 4 with Churchlands and Fort Charles.

A highlight for Bob came on 4 January, 1973 when winning the Fairford Chase at Cheltenham.

Appropriately, however, his final victory as a jockey came from the source with which he’d embarked on his racing career, that of Michael Scudamore. Having ridden his first winner

on a Scudamore-trained horse, Bob now won his last race for him, a Warwick novice chase on January 26, 1974 aboard a horse named Cabalva.

Bob relinquished his licence before the end of that season.

Between 1976 & 1977, he was the Racecourse Manager at Worcester.

During 1978 & 1979 - after the revolution - Bob trained in Iran having obtained a licence from the Tehran Racing Company. He sent out 85 winners. Then, from 1980 until 1990, Bob was the Stud Manager of Haras Los Samanes for Jose 'Pepe' Sahagun, then the leading breeder in Venezuela.

From 1990, he was Estate Manager at Herefordshire.

His son, Frank, had a similarly short career in the saddle, riding 20 winners as an amateur (then as a professional for Venetia Williams) - these included a win on Royale De Vassy at Cheltenham on November 10, 2000.

Robert Windsor-Clive died in February 2022, aged 71.
