Born c1877, William Henry Williams was apprenticed to trainer John Clement and registered his first win on Twelvebore in the Apprentices’ Handicap at Hurst Park on 23 August 1907. A newspaper report praised his performance, observing that Twelvebore was “a big handful for a little boy”.
He achieved his most important success in the 1909 Royal Hunt Cup on 4/1 favourite Dark Ronald, one of the easiest ever winners of the race. Cantering in front throughout, Dark Ronald, trained by James Clement, was given the lightest of races by William to finish two lengths ahead of outsider Arranmore (Walter Griggs) and Christmas Daisy (Harry East).
William went on to ride a total of 34 winners, enjoying his best season numerically in 1912 with 13 wins.
His last victory was on Bouleverse in the Maiden Three-Year-Old-Plate at Newmarket on 28 September 1921, making all to beat Hopeful Batchelor, the mount of Freddie Fox, by two lengths.
