Edwin Wanless had two wins under National Hunt rules, nearly eight years apart.
His first ride was also his first win, when Coldron beat 23 rivals to take the Stockton Hurdle at Sedgefield on February 9, 1938 by three lengths. The gelding was owned and trained by Ernie Davey at Malton and had not been placed in two starts that season, despite having been ridden by champion jockey Gerry Wilson on the second of them.
Edwin did not retain the ride and although he had some mounts his score stood still at one when National Hunt racing was suspended in March 1942.
He returned in February 1945, and at Southwell on December 29 of that year he had his second, and final, success when Ambassadress, also trained by Ernie Davey, beat 14 others to claim the Caunton Juvenile Hurdle by a length. The three-year-old filly had been placed in all five of her previous starts, with Edwin having twice finished second on her, so she was not winning out of turn.
They had one more, unplaced, effort together at Wetherby on February 1, 1946, and it was at the same course that Edwin had his final ride when unplaced on Tango Twist in the Bilton Hurdle (Division 1) on Easter Monday, April 7, 1947.
Edwin won on his first ride, Coldron at Sedgefield on February 9, 1938
Edwin's final winner: Ambassadress at Southwell, December 29 1945
