The son of an Innkeeper, Ernest Billy Warne, born in Stockton-on Tees on January 1, 1869, was apprenticed to James Ryan at Newmarket.

He rode his first winner, St Michael, at Newmarket in 1886 and won the next year's Ascot Gold Cup on Bird of Freedom. In 1888, he rode the winners of 37 races including the 1888 One Thousand Guineas winner, Briar Root.

He began riding in Hoppegarten, Germany in 1891 and, in 1909, rode Arnfried to win the German Derby. He also won three St Legers. He was leading jockey at Baden-Baden for 11 consecutive seasons.

He lived in Germany for twenty years, owning real estate valued at 100,000 marks.

By 1914 he was at the end of his career, riding just 7 winners out of 96 rides.

When war broke out he was interned in Ruhleben (November 1914). After the war and back in England (1919) he rode Starflower ll, a winner at York for Jack Jarvis. Billy was then fifty.

He died in Glanely Rest Home, at Exning, near Newmarket, on June 3, 1952, aged 83.
