Alfred Walters, sometimes listed in the form book results as ‘A. Walters Jnr’ – presumably to differentiate him from the involvement of the owner Mr A. Walters – had six wins under National Hunt rules.
Born in 1871, he had his first ride when unplaced on Essex in the March Handicap Hurdle at Maiden Erlegh on March 19, 1901. Despite having rides in each of the next five years, it was not until January 10, 1907 that he finally won a race. This came at Haydock Park when, in an “exciting race,” as Sporting Life put it, his mount Paddy Leary beat the 5-4 on favourite Bramber, ridden by Tom Moran, by a short head.
Alfred doubled his score when Vardon took the Doddington Hurdle by a length and a half at Southwell on February 25. Then at Cardiff on Easter Monday he gained an unexpected victory when Osselet, the outsider in a field of four, beat the favourite Reptile by 25 lengths to land the Cardiff Selling Handicap Hurdle.
He did not win another race until March of the following year, the drought being ended when Bed Of Stone won the Wolverhampton Handicap Hurdle at that Staffordshire venue by a length. A few weeks later, the five-year-old was bought by Mr A. Walters (possibly Alfred’s father) and gave him the last two wins of his career. The first was a victory by three-quarters of a length in the County Handicap Hurdle at Monmouth on October 14; the second was a five-length success in the Ledbury Selling Hurdle at Colwall Park on May 10, 1909.
Alfred’s final ride was on Old Moore, unplaced in the Foord Selling Handicap Hurdle at Folkestone on December 18, 1911.
He served in the Army Service Corps during the First World War and was killed in action on March 28, 1918. He was buried in the village of Letcombe Bassett, near Wantage.
