Jump jockey Hazel Win had less than a dozen rides during the 1980/81 season but won on two of them.
A conditional with Tony Gillam who trained at Roecliffe, near Boroughbridge, Yorkshire, she had her first victory at Sedgefield on December 12, 1980 when 25/1 outsider Grand Trianon, owned and trained by Gillam, recorded a comfortable success in the Brandon Handicap Chase. The eight-year-old took the lead after the final fence and came home 12 lengths clear. Formally trained by Josh Gifford, Grand Trianon had raced only once since May 1979 and had been pulled up on that occasion.
Next time out Grand Trianon was a well-beaten fifth in a better quality chase at Ascot in January, but back in the humbler surroundings of Sedgefield on February 13, 1981, Hazel made it two wins from three rides on him when taking the lead on the run-in and staying on to beat Durham Lad by two lengths at the end of the South Shields Handicap Chase.
They had three more starts together after that, the last of which saw them finish last of five finishers in the Oxton Handicap Chase at Southwell on October 5, 1981. That was Hazel’s final ride.
