Arthur Waddington

1877 - 1943

National Hunt jockey Arthur Waddington was born in 1877. He had his first ride in public on Lamblike in a Southwell selling chase on October 15, 1894, finishing third. But it wasn’t long before he tasted victory, that first win coming on 6-4 favourite Greengage in a selling chase at Hull on Boxing Day 1894.

He enjoyed his two best seasons in 1900 and 1901, riding 26 winners in each, placing him ninth in the National Hunt jockeys’ table both times.

He rode in six Grand Nationals between 1898 and 1905, finishing fourth on Shaun Aboo in 1904. His full Grand National record was:

1898: Electric Spark (pulled up)

1899: Electric Spark (8th)

1900: Alpheus (fell)

1901: Coolgardie (failed to finish)

1904: Shaun Aboo (4th)

1905: Royal Drake (fell)

He rode a total of 152 winners over jumps, the last of them being a dead-heat on Hairbird in the Burton Joyce Handicap Hurdle at Southwell on October 17, 1905 (below).

Southwell was also the venue for his final ride, finishing unplaced on Miss Kilham in the Elvaston Hunters’ Hurdle on May 28, 1906.

Arthur Waddington died in 1943.
