Born on June 1, 1951, Greg Wilson was a conditional jockey with Newmarket trainer David Morley and had his first ride under National Hunt rules when Trumpet Dance led for part of the way before fading in the Paxton Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2) at Huntingdon on December 3, 1974.
Exactly one year later came the only success of his career when Charles Swift, trained by Morley, proved too good for 15 rivals in the Pickwell Maiden Hurdle (Division 2) at Leicester, leading from halfway and beating Poui by seven lengths. Charles Swift was owned by Sir William Pennington-Ramsden, who, as ‘Bobby’ Pennington, had finished second on the one-eyed hunter Bovril III, a 100/1 outsider, in the 1927 Grand National.
After Greg and Charls Swift had finished second next time out at Worcester in January, stable jockey Bob Davies took over in the saddle.
Greg had his final ride when Murray Flash was unplaced in the Knight, Frank & Rutley Opportunity Handicap Hurdle qualifier at Towcester on November 25, 1976. Although no longer holding a jockey’s licence he remained in David Morley’s employment for several years afterwards.
