George Wilson.

c1876-1927

Born around 1876, northern-based National Hunt jockey George Wilson rode a total of 74 winners between 1895 and 1910, gaining by far his biggest success when winning the 1902 Scottish Grand National on Canter Home.

He rode his first winner on Keelman, who landed the Holmes Selling Hurdle by a length at Sheffield & Rotherham on 4 November 1895.

He enjoyed his most successful year in 1902 with ten wins including a treble at Hexham on 1 May aboard Veridian in the Leazes National Chase, Leviathan in the Hexham Handicap Hurdle and Canter Home in the Dilston Handicap Chase. The previous month, Canter Home had provided George with victory in the Scottish Grand National at Bogside.

He never again reached double figures for a season, achieving his last success on Ted in the Brough Hall Maiden Hurdle at Catterick Bridge on 22 December 1910.

George Wilson died in 1927.
