Wally Wing

The son of Irish jockey Morny Wing, Walter N. Wing, aged 18, arrived in Madras on November 20, 1937, to ride for the season. He had ridden just one winner when, on January 11, he collapsed and died from an internal haemorrhage following a freak accident whilst playing tennis.

He was apprenticed to Fred Winter at Epsom and, the previous season, showing great promise, had ridden 17 winners, 16 seconds and 22 thirds.

His outstanding success had come when winning the Great Metropolitan at Epsom on the Irish horse, Corofin.

The race was run in heavy rain. Irish invader Corofin took up the running coming down round Tatttenham Corner and drew effortlessly away to win at 100/8.

He was only 16 and weighed 5st 10lb when he won the Liverpool Autumn Cup in November 1935, on Lord Glanely's Emborough.

Before that, he had finished second in the Cambridgeshire on Man's Pal.

The early death of such a talent robbed the sport of a potentially great rider.
