John Quinton Wathen had seven wins under National Hunt rules in the first half of the 1980s. A conditional jockey with David Wintle, he had his first ride at Chepstow on November 29, 1980, when Levkimis was unplaced in the Angler Opportunity Selling Handicap Hurdle.
The last race on the card at Hereford on August 29, 1981 saw his first victory when John Silver, trained by David Wintle, made all and took the Grunwick N.H. Flat Race by a distance. He claimed a second winner when Altaghderry Run landed the Willersey Selling Handicap Hurdle at Warwick on November 7, beating Miss Metro by three-quarters of a length.
Ludlow was the scene of his third success when Treasures Jubilee finished 20 lengths clear in the Stretton Conditional Jockeys’ Selling Handicap Hurdle on September 29, 1982. That was John’s sole winner of the season but the 1983/84 campaign started well when Winter Words, trained like Altaghderry Run by Cathie Lloyd-Jones, beat Brigadier Green by ten lengths in the Welcome Selling Hurdle at Southwell on August 30.
Chalkies Pet beat 21 rivals in the Poor Duke Conditional Jockeys’ Selling Hurdle at Warwick on the first day of December for win number five, but John did not ride another winner all season, despite having nearly 50 rides.
However, his perseverance was rewarded with another success when He’s A Tramp led all the way to win the Watchet Novices’ Hurdle at Taunton on October 4, 1984 and held the persistent challenge of Air Cadet to score by three-quarters of a length.
John had his final victory back at Chepstow, the scene of his first ride, when Cons Pal was driven out on the flat to beat Glen Road by three lengths in the Cantile Handicap Hurdle on April 9, 1985. His last three wins were all trained by David Wintle.
His final ride was when pulling up on Wibis Range in the Combe Martin Novices’ Hurdle at Newton Abbot on September 13, 1985.
