PAINTING MODES OF THE RENAISSANCE

Renaissance artists developed four different painting modes during Renaissance. The four canonical painting modes used modelling effects to create dimensionality in art. These were sfumato, unione, chiaroscuro and cangiante.

SFUMATO Technique

Sfumato is a painting technique which involves blending the edge between colors so that there is a soft transition. The term "sfumato" is Italian which translates to soft, vague or blurred.

The most prominent practitioner creator of this technique is

LEONARDO DA VINCI.

UNIONE Technique

The method of employing “Unione” in a painting creates a higher tonal key that where the image consists primarily of light tones, without dark excessive dark shadows that are seen in chiaroscuro.

The most prominent practitioner and creator of this technique is

RAPHAEL.

CHIAROSCURO Technique

The word chiaroscuro is Italian for light and shadow. It's one of the classic techniques used in the works of artists like Rembrandt, da Vinci, and Caravaggio. It refers to the use of light and shadow to create the illusion of light from a specific source shining on the figures and objects in the painting.

The most prominent practitioner of this technique are

Rembrandt, da Vinci, and Caravaggio

however this technique was primarily

developed by

RAPHAEL.

CANGIANTE Technique

In the Cangiante technique, one color abruptly replaces another color, to create shadow or to highlight an area that would be dulled more if the color would simply be mixed with brown or black

The most prominent practitioner and creator of this technique is

MICHELANGELO.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC OF THE CLASSICAL PERIOD

It was in the instrumental music of the Classical period that important changes in musical form and style happened. The following are: sonata, symphony, concerto, and chamber music.

CONCERTO

A concerto (from the Italian: concerto, plural concerti or, often, the anglicised form concertos) is a musical composition usually composed in three parts or movements, in which (usually) one solo instrument (for instance, a piano, violin, cello or flute) is accompanied by an orchestra or concert band.

SONATA

Sonata, type of musical composition, usually for a solo instrument or a small instrumental ensemble, that typically consists of two to four movements, or sections, each in a related key but with a unique musical character.

SYMPHONY

Symphony, a lengthy form of musical composition for orchestra, normally consisting of several large sections, or movements, at least one of which usually employs sonata form (also called first-movement form).

CHAMBER MUSIC

Chamber music is a form of classical music that is composed for a small group of instruments—traditionally a group that could fit in a palace chamber or a large room .

WHAT TO DO

  1. Demonstrate the different painting modes of the Renaissance using the shape of your choice.

  2. This activity requires the use of OIL PASTELS. Draw four of the shapes you have chosen.

  3. Apply one mode for each shape; thus, completing the four modes of the Renaissance.

  4. Take a video of yourself while doing the task.

  5. Take a full image of your output.

  6. Post your work which includes the image of your output and your process video in your BLOG. Your blog must contain a brief introduction of the task.

  7. Your video must use any of the instrumental music above as background music.

  8. Submit link to GOOGLE CLASSROOM.
