In Korean calligraphy or artistic writing, the hangul is the Korean alphabet. The hanja is the Korean term or Chinese characters. Chinese characters are believed to have come to Korea during the second to the third century CE with the proliferation of Buddhism in the country. During the Japanese occupation of Korea, the increase in nationalism led to the replacement of the hanja with the hangul. Since then, Korean calligraphy has slowly developed its own style and stroke.
