The word origami is a combination of two Japanese words, ori means “to fold” and kami which means “paper’. The earliest existing written reference to this craft was in a poem in 1680 that mentioned a butterfly design of folder paper used in a Shinto wedding ceremony. However, it has long existed as a folk craft in Japan. When Japan reopened its borders to the foreigners in the 1860’s, origami further developed by adding and adapting techniques from Western paper-folding crafts, which included the use of the bicolored paper and the disallowing of cuts in the design. One of the most popular is the paper crane.
